Description
A Global IT Service firm is seeking a hands-on Data Scientist to join the Catalog Management Section within the Data Knowledge Department.
This is not a research-only or reporting-only role. You will be responsible for the entire lifecycle of data science, from deep-dive analysis of Japanese catalog data to the actual implementation of models and logic.
Leveraging GCP and LLM technologies (e.g., Azure OpenAI), you will help automate data normalization and enrichment processes, directly impacting the quality of Rakuten’s data platforms and ecosystem.
Responsibilities:
- Translate business challenges into technical data science tasks and actionable solutions
- Perform data analysis on large-scale Japanese text/catalog data to derive insights and identify quality issues
- Design, develop, and implement AI models and AI-driven logic (e.g., LLM-based enrichment)
- Improve existing manual workflows from a system-level perspective, and design and drive their migration to AI agents with a human-in-the-loop approach
- Evaluate data, model, and LLM output performance using statistical methods and evaluation datasets to ensure high-quality output
- Drive data-informed decisions through hypothesis testing and clear communication of findings to stakeholders
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate solutions into production data pipelines
Required skills:
- 5+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or a related field
- Solid understanding and hands-on experience with supervised learning algorithms
- Experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP)
- Strong proficiency in Python for data processing and model building
- Ability to understand and derive insights from Japanese text data (product names, descriptions, etc.)
- Practical experience building LLM-based applications or pipelines (e.g., prompt engineering, RAG, structured output, function calling) and improving them through evaluation
- Ability to quickly learn and apply the latest AI technologies
- Ability to extract and aggregate data independently with SQL (e.g., BigQuery), perform exploratory data analysis, and form and test hypotheses
- Foundational statistics for data evaluation and model validation
- Ability to structure complex problems and propose solutions considering trade-offs between cost and impact
- Experience with Git for collaborative development
Why should you apply:
- Contribute to strategic initiatives in the rapidly growing fields of AI and technology
- Gain broad experience through projects spanning diverse technology and business areas
- Work with global teams and stakeholders, leveraging both Japanese and English
